JÄMTLAND

Jämtland is a magnet for skiing-enthusiasts during the winter months, and with resorts like Åre, it's little wonder.

Waterfalls at Tännforsen, JämtlandThe Jämtland summer offers the visitor a wide range of outdoor adventure and cultural activity set in a spectacular natural setting.  What better backdrop for a game of golf than the beautiful scenery of the high fells in the west? The fells offer the hiker wide-open vistas and an amazing sense of freedom. Jämtland is also known for its vast forests, its beautiful art and craft, its delicious "tunnbröd" (thin, flat bread) and the tranquillity of its long summer nights.

The region enjoys a rich and active cultural life, with its many museums, and plays host to plenty of exhibitions and festivals. The biggest festival is the weeklong "Storsjöyran", each July in Östersund. Just outside Östersund visitors are welcome to the outdoor museum of Jamtli, which takes the onlooker back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Here you can watch the daily life of the early settlers in the area.

You can also visit Sweden's largest waterfall, Tännforsen. Jämtland is also known for its many caves, such as Korallgrottan, the longest in Sweden.
