LAPPLAND

A view of Stora Sjöfallet in LapplandThe provinces of Lappland and Norrbotten in northern Sweden attract visitors wishing to experience the great outdoors and unspoiled nature of Europe's best-preserved wilderness. Because much of this area lies north of the Artic Circle, the days are light almost round the clock during the summer months. Here you can pursue all manner of outdoor pursuits - mountain climbing and hiking, fishing, shooting rapids, cross-country and downhill skiing, dog sledding and much more.

Many of the Swedish Laplanders, the Sami, live in the province, traditionally herding their reindeer, creating beautiful and unique handcrafts and following their strong cultural traditions. Lapland is also the site of Sweden's highest mountain - Mt Kebnekaise - rising 2,111 metres (about 7,000 feet) about sea level.

The famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi provides an absolutely unforgettable overnight stay. You can also visit the Icehotel Art Centre inaugurated in 2000, and unlike the hotel itself, doesn't melt, and is open all year round, including the summer months!
