VÄSTERBOTTEN

Scenery in Västerbotten under the midnight sunIn Västerbotten you can enjoy the grandeur of the mountains and get acquainted with the unique culture of the Sami people. Västerbotten is the location of the largest nature reserve in Europe. Some of the province's cultural sights include the unique botanical gardens in Hemavan, and the church town in Fatmomakke -  an ancient meeting place for the Sami people and settlers.

A trip into the forest region may provide more than just a trip through nature - a trip through time as well. At Laisheden you can journey back through time some 5,000 years, to the Stone Age. In the village of Torvsjö, the settlement of Rismyrliden, and the villages in the Stöttingfjället area, time seems to have slowed down and even stood still. Visit the National Park Björnlandet, for a walk through a primeval forest with dramatic and beautiful natural scenery.

While touring through Västerbotten you will experience great variations in both its culture and nature. In the gold-mining area up north, you can visit Guldriket. Don't miss the well-known visitor centre there called Bergrum Boliden. You can also glide silently over the treetops in the world's longest cableway. Take a trip through the southern part of Västerbotten and visit the 18th-century sawmills and ironworks estates of Hörnefors, Norrbyskär and Olofsfors.
