EINSIEDELN  

A famous pilgrimage center in Switzerland, this little resort town is dominated by its Benedictine abbey, situated at one end of a large square. The attraction for pilgrims is the Gnadenkapelle (Holy Chapel), located in the basilica and made of black marble. It contains the miracle-working Black Madonna of Einsiedeln, a lavishly carved wooden statue of the Virgin dating from the 15th century.

The imposing baroque monastery with the Black Madonna is a popular destination for pilgrims. The varied alpine foothill landscape with a lake and high-moor bogs is attractive to walkers and bikers alike.
